Russia accuses the US embassy of spreading “false news” about Ukraine and threatens to expel diplomats

Russia has demanded the US embassy to stop publishing what Moscow considers false news about its military operation in Ukraine and threatened to expel US diplomats, Tass news agency reported today.

“The warning included a strongly worded letter to Lynn Tracy, the new US ambassador to Moscow, who was told that she must strictly comply with Russian law when making any statements about the Russian armed forces in Ukraine,” the agency quoted a senior Russian Foreign Ministry source as saying.

It also quoted the source as saying that US diplomats involved in what Moscow describes as “subversive activities” will be expelled.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed that the US Embassy had received a diplomatic note from the Russian Foreign Ministry, but said it was the department’s general policy not to comment on diplomatic communications.

And “defaming” the armed forces is a crime punishable under Russian law with up to five years in prison, while the charge of knowingly spreading “false information” carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
