A cluster of storms Friday night leveled a garage in Hopedale, knocked down trees, and made for a longer night than expected for several high school football teams and their fans.
Storms carrying high winds, rain, and lightning stayed mainly south of Interstate 74, with severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Fulton County, as well as southern Tazewell, McLean and Mason Counties.
The National Weather Service reported a 62-mph wind gust in Delavan. Elsewhere in Tazewell County, a three-sided parking garage at the Hopedale Medical Complex was destroyed. The garage is across the street from the Hopedale Community Building.
Several downed trees were blocking roads in Funks Grove, which is south of the Twin Cities in McLean County. Whole trees and branches came down in Mason City.
There have been no reports of injuries.
As of 11 p.m., Ameren Illinois reported 656 customers were without power.
On the opening night of the high school football season, the storm caused the delay of several contests. Tri-Valley’s game against Warrensburg-Latham in Downs was postponed until 4 p.m. Saturday with the Vikings leading 14-0.
