DU maintains lead as NDSU and South Dakota Draw Closer

Denver’s Anna Krekling vaulted into the individual lead and helped the Pioneers remain ahead in the team standings following the second round of the Summit League Women’s Golf Championship.

Krekling fired a season-low 68 (-3) as she made six birdies during her second loop around the Wilderness Ridge Country Club to build a two-stroke lead thanks to a 36-hole total of 140 (-2). The junior made a pair of key birdies late on No. 16 and No. 17 that helped the Pioneers hold off charges by NDSU and South Dakota.

Her efforts helped DU post a team score of 292 (+10) bringing their 36-hole total to 578 (+10). The Pioneers were seven shots clear of the Bison and Coyotes to start the day, but both squads cut into their lead after the final putt dropped.

NDSU posted the low team score of the day at 288 (+4) thanks to junior Catherine Monty, who turned in a career-best 67 (-4) to lead the Bison charge. Monty made five birdies, including four in a bogey-free back nine where she shot a 31.

For Monty, it was her first career round in the 60’s and was the second lowest round recorded at the Summit League Championship. Former Denver Mary Weinstein holds the record with a 65 (-7) during the 2019 event.

The Bison will start the final round three strokes behind DU and one ahead of the Coyotes, who turned in a 289 (+5). Freshman Catie Nekola matched her season low with a 70 (-1), while junior Danica Badura shot a season-low 71 (E) to aid the Coyotes efforts.

Badura and Monty are tied for third with 143 (+1) totals, while South Dakota State’s Alex Kandolin is in second alone after shooting a 72 (+1) in her second round to sit two shots behind Krekling with a 142 (E) total.
