Panama’s public works ministry (MOP) has once again postponed the date to submit bids to upgrade a stretch of the Pan-American East highway.
The date was previously pushed back from May 31 to June 30. However, many companies participating in the process requested a further extension, mostly to obtain loan approvals, local media reported. The new date is July 19.
The PPP contract valued at US$46.6mn is being tendered through process 2023-0-09-0-99-AP-008446 on procurement platform panamacompra.gob.pa.
More than 20 companies showed interest in the tender, including Mota-Engil, Construcciones El Cóndor, CRCCII and CCECC, China Harbour Engineering, Intervial Chile, Prodemex and Meco.
The contract is part of a three-stage plan involving 246km between Las Garzas in Panamá province and Yaviza in Darién. In early January, MOP prequalified some 15 groups to advance to the bidding stage.
Total investment is put at US$292mn, which will be partly provided by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation. According to daily La Estrella de Panamá, it will be the largest PPP tendered by MOP.
