These 5 Michigan Hospitals Are Among the 100 Best in the U.S., Fortune Ranking Says

Five Michigan rank on a list of the 100 best teaching and community hospitals in the United States, according to a new ranking from Fortune magazine.

The ranking is divided among teaching hospitals and community hospitals.

Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital ranked No. 2 out of all major teaching hospitals, behind only Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Texas.

“This honor is a testament to the hard work, training and experience of our medical team, clinical staff and support functions, and to the culture of excellence that permeates every unit throughout our hospital,” Alonzo Lewis, president of Trinity Health Ann Arbor, said in a statement.

The ranking differentiates between 15 “major” hospitals versus 25 smaller ones. Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital ranked No. 18 on the smaller top-25 ranking.

The community hospitals were divided between 20 large, 20 medium and 20 small communities. McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey ranked No. 8 in the medium category.

Among smaller communities, Trinity Health Chelsea Hospital ranked No. 7. Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital ranked No. 9.

“This recognition is a great honor and reinforces what local residents already know about us, which is that Chelsea Hospital is a destination for outstanding care,” Ben Miles, president of Chelsea Hospital, said in a statement. “I credit our amazing physicians, our tremendous nursing team, and all our support staff, all of whom devote their careers to bringing hope and healing to our patients.”

The Fortune/PINC AI 100 Top Hospitals ranking listed 100 hospitals out of 2,644 “short-term, acute care non-federal US hospitals,” the ranking states. The methodology, found here, is based on clinical outcomes such as mortality or complications, operational efficiency such as length of stay, patient experience, financial health and community health survey performance.

The ranked hospitals, compared to unranked ones, had 31% fewer deaths, 9% fewer patients with complications, 39% fewer infections associated with healthcare, about 20% lower inpatient expenses per discharge and a half day shorter average length of stay, according to Trinity Health officials.
